What we want to see in this year's ICM Forum
The 4th Industrial Carbon Management (ICM) Forum, a key event for the future of CCS, will be held on 10-11 October 2024 in Pau, France. The agenda for this year's forum focuses on central topics such as public awareness, the opportunities of carbon capture and utilisation, the challenges surrounding CO₂ transport infrastructure, and CO₂ standardisation.
While these issues are vital, we believe several additional priorities must be addressed to ensure meaningful progress in CCS deployment across Europe. First, fast-tracking CO₂ transport and storage standards is crucial, as regional infrastructure disparities continue to hamper the scalability of CCS projects. Additionally, overcoming public scepticism is essential. We are advocating for the development of a communication toolkit for project developers, as well as community engagement guidelines to foster trust and local support for CCS initiatives.
Furthermore, establishing an EU-wide CCS industrial alliance should be a top priority, as it would encourage knowledge sharing, facilitate infrastructure development, and ensure the EU meets its climate targets. Finally, a high-level dialogue between the CEOs of Europe’s major industrial emitters and policymakers is essential to promote the vast business opportunities that carbon capture can create. National ministers must be persuaded to implement strong national support strategies to ensure CCS plays a pivotal role in achieving the EU’s climate goals.
As the forum approaches, we hope to see these priorities reflected in the conclusions, alongside clear actions aimed at accelerating CCS projects across the continent.
