Spain has attached importance to research into CCUS making it a priority in various programmes and iniciatives. The picture is, however, bleaker than it looks at first glance.
CO2 Capture: D
There is no target for carbon capture in the NECP and therefore it cannot be higher than a D. There are only few mentions of carbon capture in the document, but the fact that it sees a role for carbon capture in addressing process emissions for me means that it has plans to support the technology moving forward and therefore is a D).
CO2 Storage: F
We can’t get around the fact that CO2 storage is still illegal in Spain, this is an automatic F.
CO2 Transport: F
The NECP makes no mention of CO2 transport or of any measures supporting the technology, it is therefore an F.
CO2 Funding: C
Although most of the support is at a research level, there are multiple funding streams available for CCS. However, the fact that they are not CCS-specific makes it a C as CCS has to compete with other technologies.
