PRESS RELEASE: Leadership Transition at CCS Europe: Chris Davies to Retire, Bergur Løkke Rasmussen Appointed as New Director

Brussels, 17 March 2025 --

Advocacy group CCS Europe today announces a leadership transition as its director, Chris Davies (70) steps back from the role he has played since the organisation’s launch two years ago.

The former British MEP, who was European Parliament rapporteur for the CO2 storage directive in 2008, will remain involved as a senior advisor.

Davies has long argued that carbon capture and storage technology has a key role to play in climate policy.  Without CCS there will be no net-zero, he claims.

From 1 April 2025 his role as director of CCS Europe will be taken by Bergur Løkke Rasmussen.  A former Danish MEP, he brings to the lobby group the experience of one of the few countries in Europe that has embraced CCS and is building carbon capture plants today.

Chris Davies commented:

"The European Commission stated last year that carbon capture is “indispensable” to the achievement of EU climate ambitions, but despite our efforts very few Member States have yet adopted strategies to secure industry decarbonisation.

“CCS is a vital tool in the fight against climate change, and CCS Europe under Bergur’s leadership has a key role to play in securing the support of policymakers for the measures needed to promote the technology’s rapid deployment.”

The Chairman of CCS Europe’s Governing Board, Rodolphe Nicolle, who is Secretary General of the European Lime Association, expressed gratitude for Chris’ contributions:

"On behalf of the Governing Board of CCS Europe, I want to extend our gratitude to Chris for his tireless commitment, leadership, and vision over the past two years in our campaign, as well as for his twenty-six years of continuous support to CCS within the Brussels community. His deep understanding of European climate policy and his passion for practical climate solutions have been invaluable. We are pleased that Chris will continue as an advisor, and we are equally excited to welcome Bergur to lead CCS Europe into its next chapter."

As CCS Europe embarks on this new phase, the organisation remains steadfast in its mission to advocate for the rapid deployment of CCS technologies as a vital tool in Europe’s transition to a climate-neutral future.
