To reach climate neutrality by 2050, technologies such as CCS will be crucial to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors, such as the steel, cement, refining or chemicals industry. This is confirmed by the European Commission with the release of the EU Industrial Carbon Management Strategy of last February.
CO2 transport infrastructure is a key enabler for CCS and to establish a European single market for CO2. However, while CO2 storage capacity targets and projections are set by the Net Zero Industry Act, market barriers and inadequate policy support remain. Open questions regarding permitting, technical standardisation, and civil liability need to be answered. While successful projects start to emerge across Europe, a supportive regulatory framework will therefore be essential in order to ensure that the EU will achieve its goal of 50 million tons CO2 storage capacity by 2030.
What best practices can we learn from current projects, and how can they help us address the challenges that remain? How could we ensure smooth CCS deployment and create a single market for CO2?
