Hungary is showing interest in CCS but needs to be more ambitious towards the rollout of this technology in the coming years.
CO2 Capture: B
The NECP references a target of 8 Mt of carbon capture by 2050, which clearly qualifies as a post-2030 target. For a "C" classification, there must be no associated timeline, which is not applicable in this instance.
CO2 Storage: C
The NECP identifies that there is storage potential on its territory, both in the short and the long-term. Although there is no target in place that would warrant a B, there is enough to earn a C.
CO2 Transport: E
The only mentions of CO2 transport states that CO2 transport pipeline may be built when relevant, and that it is important to support the development of CO2 transport R&D. In that context, it is difficult to say that Hungary is supporting the development of transport infrastructure or has concrete plans to support the development of that infrastructure in the long-term, which would be required to obtain a higher grade. In that context, E seems the most appropriate for this, even though the criteria states that E means no national level efforts in developing transport infrastructure, but commitment to supporting the mapping of where transport might be needed.
Funding: E The report does specify that it is considering funding for CCUS technologies but does not provide further details than that. The way this was mentioned indicates that the government is open to the idea in the long term, but is not currently developing such funding, which would be required to reach a D.
