Greensand CCS Project set for expansion

Greensand CCS Project in Denmark Reaches Final Investment Decision, Set for Major Expansion

Denmark’s Greensand CCS project has reached a critical milestone with a Final Investment Decision (FID) following a successful pilot phase. The project, which was hailed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as "a European value chain at its best," is now set to move to full commercial scale, with plans to store 400,000 tons of CO₂ annually by 2026. The ultimate ambition is to reach a capacity of 8 million tons per year by 2030.

INEOS led consortium announces breakthrough in carbon capture and storage

This marks a major achievement for INEOS and the coalition of 23 partners involved in the project, representing a significant step towards developing the storage capacity required to decarbonize EU industries. However, despite this success, progress across Europe has been slow. In the 18 months since von der Leyen presided over the Greensand pilot launch, only one other CCS project has reached FID.

The European Commission estimates that 30 projects the size of Greensand will be needed by 2040 to provide the storage capacity necessary for decarbonizing the bloc. While Greensand is a promising development, there is still much work to be done to scale up CCS efforts across Europe.
