Overall, France still has a long road ahead. Although it has set concrete targets for carbon capture, its NECP is still lacking when it comes to transport, storage and CCS funding.
CO2 Capture: A
France is committed to have operational carbon capture capacity by 2027. The country has established its objective to capture 4-8.5 Mt of carbon by 2030 and shared a provisional scenario predicting the capture of 6.6 Mt of carbon (1.2 Mt for biogenic CO2 and 5.4 Mt for fossil CO2) by 2030. Moreover, France is aiming to be able to capture 30-50 Mt of carbon by 2050.
CO2 Transport: C
The French government is considering all modes of transportation and there is an ongoing public consultation process to determine the best modes of transport for the industry.
CO2 Storage: C
Studies have been launched in early 2024 to determine geological storage capacity but the results are still pending.
Funding: C
An overall budget of €4.5 billion has been allocated to CCS deployment through the France 2030 programme. Additional funds are possible via ADEME for innovative projects. France is currently holding public consultations to develop a funding support mechanism aimed at industrial decarbonization, which would notably include support for storage infrastructure projects.
