PRESS RELEASE: DELAY TO 2040 CLIMATE TARGETS RISKS EU CREDIBILITY, SAYS CCS EUROPE

Brussels, 15 January 2025 --

Climate Action Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra this morning appeared before the European Parliament's industry committee in a structured dialogue on the Commission's industrial policy plans. During the dialogue, he insinuated that Europe's 2040 Climate Targets would come later in the year than originally planned.

Reacting to the news, Chris Davies, Director, CCS Europe, said: 'Any delay on 2040 climate targets will reduce the credibility of the EU's efforts to foster a clean industry sector.'

He continued: 'A comprehensive Clean Industrial Deal and ambitious climate targets are the signals that industry needs to confidently invest in key net-zero technologies like CCS.'

'We call on the Commission to address the need for an urgent and extensive scale-up in the deployment of carbon capture and storage technology,' Davies concluded.
