Austrian NECP

Overall, a mixed picture. Definitely some progress (especially given the lift of the ban on CO2 Storage), but more work to be done.

CO2 Capture: B

Austria has set a target of 4.4Mt to 12.1 Mt of carbon capture by 2040, without however setting a target for 2030.

CO2 Storage: C

Austria will lift its ban on CO2 storage, without setting a clear target for 2030 or 2040. However, the NECP does stress that Austria is in the process of establishing legal, administrative and organisational framework to support the scale-up and public acceptance of the technology.

CO2 Transport: C

Austria has not set any rules in place regarding transport infrastructure, but has indicated that it will evaluate and adapt the legal framework surrounding pipeline transport of CO2.

Funding: D

While there is no dedicated funding instrument yet, Austria has indicated that is developing the necessary financial framework to support the technology, which could potentially involve Carbon Contracts for Difference (CCfD).
